Having Courage Despite the Negativity

Courage Despite2

Opinionated Man http://aopinionatedman.com/2013/12/26/people-are-stupid-you-are-dumb/  is a blogger followed by over 28,000 people and have generated, and (I am being quite conservative here), over 500,000 hits.  This is quite impressive for a blogger being one year in the field.

In one of his recent posts, called “People Are Stupid, You Are Dumb”, he reveals having been attacked with negativity, which has been discouraging, to the point, he has been grappling emotionally, which has been quite stressful.

I think of the decisions we make and how we as mere observers of someone else who is living life, and giving life to others, will sit down and not do very much with our own lives, but without hesitation become a critic on those who have the courage to bring their passion to life, along with the hard work that goes with bringing their craft to the fore front.

Psychology Today http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/the-healing-factor/201307/the-importance-decreasing-negative-influencers is featuring the article, “The Importance of Decreasing Negative Influencers”, provides interesting information on our tendency to give power (if you will) to the negativity, which began from the beginning of time, due to our primitive need for survival.  During those times, being aware of any negative situation could be a warning to be on the defense or take cover from danger.  We have not evolved very much from this concept.  At least in primitive times it was to save our lives.  Now, we have made negativity an emotional destroyer for our lives.

Rather than following the lead of those who are pursuing their passion, and rather than taking a more locus of control position for ourselves, we “powerlessly” try to hinder someone else.

For example, LeBron James, according to Wikipedia, “….has been the subject of much scrutiny, and he has been ranked as one of America’s most popular, disliked, and influential athletes”.  How the hell can he be one of America’s most disliked and he is a tremendous talent?

Despite what LeBron endures, he comes to the game, hated or loved, and he brings it hard. He plays to win.  And because of his life, his children will never be hungry, or exposed to some of the things our children are being exposed to, because LeBron has a goal, acts on that goal, and actively pursues his passion, thereby leading the way for his children, and for his generations to come, to live well and have the opportunities to pursue their dream.  If they should fail, it sure in hell won’t be LeBron’s fault.  He has paved a way for them to be able to find their way.

We too need to pave the way for our children just as LeBron has.  Rather than hate, we need to try to emulate.

The Cut, a website, is featuring a piece called, http://nymag.com/thecut/2013/04/20-most-hated-celebrities-why-we-hate-them.html  “The Twenty Most Hated Celebrities:  Why We Hate Them”.

Are we so gullible that we do not know we are often pawns in the game of celebrity publicity status, due to the fact that public perception is one of the most used and changing tools in just about everything that surrounds our life?    So, while we are taking the time to genuinely hate someone, our perception is literally being manipulated!

Don’t be mere pawns in the game; raise your game to gain success for your life!

If our hatred and negativity was channeled productively into our own lives where we can create a success path for ourselves and our generations to come, or if we were just as courageous as those public figures we criticize, we could create the success for our own lives and really live life, rather than watching others live theirs.

Rather than hate someone, hate the place where you are in your life to move to a higher place— like making more money or creating more self empowerment or success.  Replace negativity towards someone with positivity in knowing that you too can make your mark in the world you live in.  Someone needs you!  Take your place and do what you were meant to do and live!

Rather than hate, let’s try to emulate.

With this in mind, I salute the many talents around me and the public figures I am able to be inspired by.  “Courage is not the absence of fear, but the acknowledgement of something greater than fear”.  (One of my favorite sayings from the movie,  “The Princess Diaries”) It takes courage to continue to rise above the intended hindrances and make it work for your good rather than working against you.

It takes bravery to choose to stand up and stand out, and bring your talent or gift to be scrutinized, knowing in your soul that the rewards of your labor is more than the rants of negativity.

Relationship: The Blame Game

 Blame Game2

A relationship working as a partnership is, in part, where both partners are bringing their strongest and best skills in love, creative ideas, knowledge, know-how, etc to the relationship, in turn making the relationship stronger by building and binding with the finest both partners can bring.

If both partners work it right, they can learn, watch, study, ask questions and become better, simply by following each other’s example.

In saying this, I think it is important to note that there are some partners who will allow the stronger partner to take the lead, only to make them do all the work in the relationship, while they are sitting back, putting minimal work in, and making mistakes without fixing them.  In truth, they really want their stronger partner to fix all of the mistakes in the relationship.

The problem with fixing everything is that the partner who sits back, and putting in no work is the first to blame the stronger partner for the failures in the relationship.

I must admit, I’ve not seen this partner type on a regular basis.  And by that, I mean this……

I have a friend whose partner went out of town during the Thanksgiving holiday.  (They do not live together.) She called him a few times, and he never returned her calls.  They always connected everyday in their three year relationship, so she thought it odd he never reached back to her.

Five days passed before he called her.

The only thing he cared to share was that his aunt died, there was some family turbulence, and the funeral was local.  So, he left town, she is not sure where, and he returned home to attend the funeral. She had no more information than that.

Rather than inquire about the details, in trying to be supportive, she answered his questions when asked how her holiday was.  She told him, but took notice that he was not very open about his being away during the holiday. She is not the type of person to nag, push, or pry.

She thought he would talk about it later.  Thinking he needed space, she pulled back just a little. After all, he did not tell her the funeral details about his aunt, which would have been helpful for her to know, so she could support him.  When she tried calling him a few times, she began to notice that he didn’t pick up her calls as often as he had done before.  They always took time out for each other.  Strangely, when he did return her calls, it was mostly after midnight and she was asleep.

She was concerned that the situation would get worse before it got better, yet she went along with the flow in order to observe just where this new behavior and new direction of the relationship was going.

Their interactions became few, awkward and fragmented. When he had to end a telephone conversation suddenly, he said he would call her back, but didn’t.  The whole equilibrium of the relationship was off, because his behavior was different.  This made the feel of their relationship different.

So she decided to say something.  She told him he had become distant since Thanksgiving. He gave no response. She mentioned their synchronicity was off. He said nothing.  She also told him he was teaching her to live life without him.  Nothing.  Only when she said, the words, “….and I was really liking you” is when he responded with, “Like me”?

She said nothing.

He then responded by saying, “How about me teaching you to love me more”.

Her response was, “Cool. In order to teach more love, you must first have it to teach it”.

He responded with, “I am done. You are right”.

She explained creating distance between them, due to his recent behavior, does not promote more love, but only distance.  After all, in order to receive love in abundance you must give love in abundance.

He says, and I quote, “Well this love of which you speak, you too must be void of it, because if you showed me love by example, our relationship would not be where it is today. No strong wind can knock a love like that”.

She responded to him calmly by saying, “Well the love I have shown to you and told to you, you fail to see, because you are tainted by the hurtful loves of your past.  If you could break free of your past and see me, you would see the love I have been giving to you. If you wouldn’t back up every time I say the words I love you, we would be better off”.

He responded with, “You can tell yourself that if you want to”.

She said, “I communicate with you all-the-time, and about mostly everything, and on so many subjects, but my demonstration of communicating to you, does not encourage you to respond by being more open and communicative with me, does it? So much for me leading by example.”

His response was, and I quote, “Have a good day”.

In conclusion she left him with the following thought.

“If by example, I cannot encourage you to be more open with me in simply communicating, I am less inclined to open my heart further, and risk more hurt to love you any more than I have already by example”.

The end.
